Is DEGIRO still available in Romania ? Also, got a message that the UK based website is shutting down permanently - are they out of business there?
Hey there,
Thanks for your message. I double-checked and DEGIRO is still available in Romania. However, they stopped operating in the UK last year. Here’s their up-to-date list of countries they accept clients from and operate in:
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Best wishes,
Andris
Hi Andris
Thank you so much - I was trying to create an account in Romania but it doesn’t present Romania as a selectable country. Am i doing something wrong?
Regards
John
Hey John,
Can you please send me a screenshot of where you’re stuck? Normally you should have no problem selecting Romania as your country.
Kind regards,
Andris
Hi John,
Thanks for the screenshot. Now I see what the problem is. Basically, at DEGIRO the country selection simply determines the language of the platform which you’ll be using. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be living in the given country. Thus, the reason why you can’t find Romania as an option is that they don’t have Romanian language on their website/platform.
So if you’re living in Romania and would like to have an English platform, you should register through their Irish website: https://www.degiro.ie/. Once you’re on this website just follow these steps:
- Click on “Open your account”
- Create an account by filling out your email, username and password
- Verify your email address
- Complete your registration by filling out the questionnaire
Please also note that there might be slight differences in services provided among different countries (e.g. some stocks might be slightly cheaper).
Kind regards,
Andris
Hi Andris
Thank you so much for this. I was wondering if you could help me with something else. I am a UK citizen, not living in Romania. I wanted to open a savings account in Romania. Is this possible? I have been trying to do this and am just going round in circles - I was trying with Banc Transilvania. Is this something possible and if so would you know if someone reliable can help with this?
Kind regards
John
Hey John,
Opening a savings account in a foreign country can sometimes be challenging due to regulatory requirements and banking procedures. However, it’s often possible for non-residents to open accounts, though the process can vary depending on the bank and the specific country’s regulations.
In Romania, it’s possible to open a bank account as a non-resident according to federal regulations. As long as you have all the basic necessary documentation and some patience you will be able to open an account that meets your needs. Although keep in mind that it’s up to the banks/brokers whether they provide such service.
I recommend reaching out to Romanian banks through their customer service channels, either by phone or email. They should be able to provide you with the necessary information regarding the documents and procedures required for opening an account as a non-resident.
Best wishes,
Andris
