Trying to sell Santander UK shares

I am an HSBC UK bank account holder living in Spain, I also have a Sabadell bank account in Spain, my problem is I have some Santander shares which I was gifted when I lived in the UK, they are currently held by the Santander nominee service run by Equiniti, and I want to sell them.

Equiniti say that because I reside in Spain they cannot sell them for me, and I would need to transfer them to a broker in Spain, could you please tell me which online share dealing service I could use to sell them, if not, do you have any ideas of the route I need to take which may help me cash these shares in.

Thanks

Adey

Hi Adey,

Thank you for reaching out. Since Equiniti cannot sell your Santander shares due to your Spanish residency, transferring them to a broker that operates in Spain is a logical step.

We’ve compiled a list of the Best international online brokers in Spain in 2025, which you can find here. Many of these brokers allow you to hold and sell individual stocks, including Santander shares.

Steps to Sell Your Shares:

  1. Choose a Suitable Broker
  • Make sure they accept share transfers from Equiniti. Some brokers may only support purchases, not incoming transfers.
  1. Initiate a Stock Transfer from Equiniti
  • Once your new brokerage account is set up, request a stock transfer form from both your chosen broker and Equiniti.
  1. Sell the Shares via Your New Broker
  • After the transfer is complete, you should be able to sell your Santander shares through your new brokerage account.

If you need any further guidance on broker selection feel free to ask!

Best regards,
Andris
